Now That You Have Applied to the Apprentice program, What’s Next?

Frequently Asked Questions

Apprenticeship is a combination of “on the job training” and classroom instruction.  First and second year apprentices may be assigned to attend daytime training.  Daytime training will be scheduled one day every other week.  Third through fifth year apprentices will attend evening classes scheduled twice weekly. Apprentices work for local contractors under the guidance of a Journeyman during the workweek and are paid by the contractors for work performed while learning their trade.

How long is the Apprenticeship?

The Plumber\Pipe fitter Apprenticeship is a five-year program.

How much does apprenticeship cost?

The only cost associated with the Apprenticeship Program is the initiation fee to join the local union and monthly dues.

How much are apprentices paid?

Starting wages for a first-year apprentice is 45% of Journeyman wages, plus benefits.  As apprentices complete each year of work and classroom instruction, they are advanced to the next wage level.  The hourly wage for a fifth year apprentice is 80% of Journeyman wages, plus benefits.  A Journeyman currently earns $36.47/hour, plus benefits.

Does this program qualify for VA benefits?

Yes, our program is approved for VA benefits. Upon acceptance into the apprentice program, the administrative assistant will assist you with the required forms.

Pre-employment drug screening?

Most employers in Local 230’s jurisdiction require drug testing.  Local 230 will give you more information on their policy.  You will also be required to take a drug test prior to being accepted into the apprenticeship program.  The Committee pays the cost for this test.
